Summary

This article demonstrates how to connect to an RSS news feed, a service used to keep users informed of the latest news on a Web site. If you are unfamiliar with the concept of RSS news feeds, you should read the primer article listed in Related Links before continuing.

More Information

In order to connect to an RSS news feed, you need to use a special piece of software called an RSS aggregator. (aggregator = fancy word for reader) The purpose of an aggregator is to download and manage information from a news feed. An aggregator looks and functions very similar to an e-mail or news reader.

Downloading an RSS Aggregator

There are several RSS aggregators available on the Web - which one is best is a matter left for the user to decide. In this article, we'll be using a freeware aggregator called FeedReader. If you want to check out other aggregators, try the list at http://email.about.com/cs/rssfeedreaders/tp/windows_free.htm.

  2. After the installation process is complete, load FeedReader. (Start, Programs, FeedReader, FeedReader)
  3. Click New.
  4. In the Please enter URL of feed text box, type http://www.power-tab.net/rss/PTNet.xml, and then click Next.
  5. Click Finish. You should see the Power Tab .net News feed item appear in the left pane of the aggregator.
  6. Click the Power Tab .net News feed item in the left pane of the aggregator. A list of news articles will appear in the top right pane.
  7. Click a news article in the top right pane of the aggregator. The message body for the news article will appear in the bottom right pane.
  8. Click the Read on link in the message body to proceed to the page related to the news article.

Once you have connected to the news feed, any new items added to the feed will automatically appear in the aggregator.

Connecting to Other RSS News Feeds

RSS aggregrators can happily manage multiple feeds at the same time. In fact, it is one of the more enticing reasons to use RSS news feeds. In order to connect to other RSS news feeds, you first need to find out the URL of the feed you want to connect to. Once you have the URL, you can follow the same procedure as outlined above to connect to the feed. (Making sure you change to the appropriate URL in step 4)
