Overview

As more and more Web sites begin to surface on the Internet, it becomes increasing more difficult for users (Web surfers) to keep track of the latest happenings on their favorite Web sites. In the same vain, it becomes increasing more important for Webmasters to keep users informed of the latest news on their site, and to do it as efficiently as possible. RSS (really simple syndication) news feeds provide a way for both Webmasters and users alike to maintain and keep informed of the latest information available on a Web site with as little headache as possible.

More Information

In layman's terms, an RSS feed is nothing more than a specially formatted text file containing a list of news items. The file is updated by the Webmaster and placed in a folder on his/her Web site where it can be read from offsite users using a special piece of software called an RSS aggregator. (reader) When a user loads an aggregator, it connects to one or more pre-defined news feeds (which may or may not be on different Web sites) and automatically displays any information that has changed since the last time the news feeds were read. The following diagram illustrates what a user can expect to see when running a typical RSS aggregator.

As you can see, an aggregrator looks very similar to an e-mail or news reader. The left pane displays a list of news feeds that the user is managing on his/her machine. The top right pane displays the list of news articles present in the selected news feed. The bottom right pane displays the message body for the selected news article. In this particular diagram, you're viewing the Power Tab .net RSS news feed, which displays the latest news, article and site updates for the www.power-tab.net Web site.
